Simcoe County teacher Amy Chevis re-elected to ETFO provincial Executive
August 18, 2021
TORONTO, ON – Amy Chevis, a teacher and president of Simcoe County Elementary Occasional Teachers, has been re-elected to the provincial Executive of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). Chevis was first elected to the ETFO provincial Executive in 2019.
“I believe in the power of collaboration and working with our affiliates to build community relationships that are critically important in our fight to protect public education,” says Chevis. “I’m eager to continue to advance our professions today, tomorrow and in future challenges as we confront this hostile Conservative government together. We have stood strong in solidarity through a contentious round of bargaining that rolled straight into a pandemic. I look forward to representing ETFO members again.”
Chevis began teaching in 2007 after obtaining her bachelor of education from Lakehead University. She was first elected to the Simcoe County Occasional Teacher Local Executive in 2010. She served as equity chair before being elected local president in 2012. Her work began with mobilizing members against the Bill 115 legislation imposed on teachers and continues by engaging members to help protect publicly funded education.
At the provincial level, Chevis was previously a member of ETFO’s Collective Bargaining Standing Committee for four years, serving as Chair in 2018-2019. She has attended numerous conferences and workshops for ETFO leaders and been a presenter on collective bargaining processes. Chevis has been a member of the Barrie District Labour Council since 2013 and has been a delegate to both the Ontario Federation of Labour and Canadian Labour Congress conventions.
ETFO represents 83,000 elementary public school teachers, occasional teachers and education professionals across the province. Its Building Better Schools education agenda can be viewed at BuildingBetterSchools.ca.
