World Oceans Day

The theme for World Oceans Day 2021 is, “One Ocean. One Climate. One Future - Together.

The United Nations Environment website says that “UN Environment works with governments, businesses, universities and civil society groups around the world to promote the protection and sustainable management of our precious marine and coastal environments.” 


This work supports the achievement of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 14, Life Below Water, which is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

RSVP and participate in the June 8 day long UN World Oceans Day Virtual Event. 

  • Map the oceans - name and draw the oceans. Discuss the sizes of the oceans relative to the earth’s surface and their impact. How have they changed in the last decade?
  • The earth’s respiratory system – learn about the oceans’ currents in the video How do ocean currents work?
  • Where do ocean animals live and how do they use the currents?
  • Recreation on the ocean - what can you do for fun?
  • Examine the adverse effects of plastic on ocean life at Kids Take Action Against Ocean Plastic.
  • Explore the difference between salt-water and fresh-water and how salt-water is made.
  • Water Cycle - where does our water come from and where does it go? See the book All the Water in The World for primary and junior grades.
  • Have students research facts about why the ocean is important and how everyone can help ocean life at Why do oceans and seas matter?
  • Explore how people impact ocean life at UN Environment Explore Topics Oceans-Seas.
  • “What Are We Eating?” Check out food labels for how far fish had travelled.
  • How do our global actions impact the oceans? See how at NASA Climate Kids: Oceans​.
  • Look at how people make a living on the oceans. Find out what different types of marine/ocean jobs and careers there are. Describe each one and the education and/or training needed to do it.
